16AWG is the right gauge for shorter speaker runs in residential and light commercial audio installations — background music zones, small-room surround speakers, bookshelf speakers, and in-ceiling speakers within 50 feet of the amplifier or volume control. CMR and CL3R rated, it meets fire safety requirements for in-wall and riser installations in residential and commercial buildings, the same coverage as the 14AWG version at a lower gauge.
The thinnest and lightest OFC in-wall speaker wire in the lineup at 0.201 in. OD and 15 lbs per 500ft — 16AWG leaves more conduit fill capacity than 14AWG or 12AWG and is faster to route through walls in installations where multiple runs share the same conduit or wall cavity. 65 strands of oxygen-free bare copper per conductor provide flexibility for routing through walls, around corners, and into wall plates. For runs over 50 feet, 4-ohm speakers, or amplifiers over 100 watts, upgrade to 14AWG or 12AWG.
